How to Measure a J Bolt

Bolts ,J-bolts ,Anchor bolt ,Carriage bolts ,Clevis Bolts

A J-bolts is a bent hook with a straight threaded post used for hanging items from a ceiling or wall. It's measured in seven dimensions that specify the width and length for each segment of its form. Manufacturers may specify a sequence for the measurements of bolt size to be used when ordering special bent bolts. Consumers may only find one or two of these measurements necessary for various applications. Use all seven bolt size specifications to make an order from a manufacturer, broker, warehouse or supplier. Use any pertinent measurements for deciding which J-bolts is best for a job.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  1. 1

Measure the diameter of the post. Take this measurement at the threaded end and use a "D" to mark it, such as D=1/8. The diameter thickness is consistent over the entire bolt and determines the general strength of a J bolt.

  2. 2

Measure the length of J bolts from the threaded end to the inside cup of the hook. Indicate this figure with an "L." Add this measurement to the diameter to show the overall bolt length.

  3. 3

Measure diameter of the inner circle formed by the hook. Show this figure with the letter "C." The figure is slightly larger than the opening of the hook, and thus does not indicate a size for items the hook can receive.

  4. 4

Measure the opening of the hook's throat and illustrate it with the letter "E." This shows how big the hook opening is, and what size bucket handles or lanyard rings will fit into it.

  5. 5

Measure the length of the threaded section on the post. Use the letter "T" to notate this number. This shows how much of the J bolt will fit into a threaded opening, or how much of the bolt is supported when driven into wood.

  6. 6

Measure the distance between the post and the bent back of the hook. Use an "M" to document this figure. It shows the angle of the hook and the radius of twisting space needed for installation.

  7. 7

Measure the distance between the end of the hook and the inside cup of the hook. Use an "N" to record the figure. This gives another indication of size for items the hook will support by noting the length of the small end of the J.
